Are you willing to explore a new possibility for your photography business?
Many of us think that our business and/or our life needs to look like everyone else’s.
Newer photographers look to more experienced photographers to see what gear they use, what their website looks like, their instagram feed, what they charge, the words they use to describe what they do, branding, photo style, we emulate. We inspire to be like those around us.
Struggling photographers grasp at the same things. Thinking that what other more established or successful photographers are doing is the answer to their business worries.
In our personal lives many of us do that same thing. Our kids have to have a certain stroller to fit in, a certain school, a certain neighborhood, the car we drive, the shoes and bags we wear, the vacations we take are all part of the comparison trap that we can easily find ourselves in.
But what if we decided to do things differently? How many possibilities could you create for your business (or your life) that you currently have never considered?
You may look at the crowded field of photographers in your town, or googled or followed on instagram and think that they have it all figured out.
The sheer volume of photographers doing exactly the same thing as you think you want to do can make you feel like there are limited possibilities for you because of all this sameness.
How will you stand out? Why will a potential client choose you? What do you offer that is different from every other photographer that has a perfect website and seemingly endless gorgeousness on social media?
What if you opened the possibility for you and your business by creating a new opportunity for yourself? What can you do that is different from every other photographer? How can your business look different? How can it act differently?
This takes courage I know. We need courage to become uncomfortable and be different.
For us, for our photography business, we were ready for new challenges and opportunities. We love our clients, love the incredible planners we were fortunate enough to work with, love our friends and family and living in the desert. But we were ready for a new opportunity.
We decided to pivot our business and move to France. We were ready to create something new.
How do you get started exploring new possibilities for your business?
Grab a pen and piece of paper and start brainstorming. Write down all the outrageous and not so outrageous things you could do or do differently.
Be courageous, be a little bit uncomfortable. Stretch yourself. It’s exciting and scary at the same time. Don’t be afraid to create your own path. And make sure you have fun while doing it!
The first photo above is the entry way – the reception area. This blue walled room will be our photo studio and that view is from that open window behind Keith, right into the courtyard. Our office will be a few steps down the hallway from the studio. So excited, podcast studio, conference room, gorgeous old building in the heart of the historic district, ready to be painted and refreshed!
